Master Chef
In the lull that is summer TV, we discovered Gordon Ramsey's Master Chef ...David bought in hook, line, and sinker and has started - after eight years of marriage - cooking with gusto. So far, he's kept it in the breakfast genre, but it's been delicious. Hooray for my Master Chef ...

Middle School Moment
One of the things I enjoy most about my new job is teaching grammar. It really is fascinating and one of the few things about English that is finite.
So today we were learning about pronouns and the pronoun's antecedent (the noun the pn replaces). We were working on the following sentence to identify the pronouns and antecedents:
John dropped the ball. He dropped it.
The rest of the conversation went like this:
ME: What is the pronoun in this sentence?
Kids: He.
ME: And what is its antecedent?
Kids: John.
Bri: Mrs. R. - isn't there another pronoun?
ME: There sure is - what is it?
Bri: It.
ME: Excellent. It is a neuter pronoun - it has no gender. And what is is antecedent?
Kids: Ball!
Wild, hysterical laughter over the fact that the neuter pronoun's antecedent was ball fills the room.
ME: See - this is why you come to my class ... never a dull moment. Class dismissed.

Ivy Meets ET
Liz recently sent us the following picture of Ivy. In the shot, she's "watching" ET with big sister Annabelle. Apparently Liz tried in vain to get her to stop, but she insisted on continuing the viewing. This photo was taken 20 minutes in. I love the peeping eye.
I don't know about you, but I remember being terrified watching ET as a 10 year old. The creepy hospital/lab scenes with a chalky ET were the worst.

Ordered
In all the fast and furious hubbub of the new school year, I already find myself wistful for the pace of summer. One of the most peaceful parts of this past summer was reorganizing spaces in our home. There is little in life that makes me feel more calm than a functional and orderly space. I suppose the process gives me a false sense of control and security, but it works so I go with it. What follows are the before and after shots of two closets that felt particularly wonderful to order this summer. My take-away? A small budget, matching hangers, and the Home Depot can go a long way.
