Fair Game

Ok - I happen to be out driving around last week between 8 and 9 p.m. and stumbled upon an amazingly dry, entertaining, and smart radio program on my friendly NPR station. Fair Game is it's name and it's a production of PRI (public radio international). Although it's hard to really describe it's true flavor without including a sound bit, but I would say it's a combination of E-News, The Daily Show, and Morning Edition.

The program I listened to covered hollywood buzz, politics, and the day's biggest news. The piece I enjoyed most was about the Navy's satellite shoot-down this week. The range of commentary was laugh out loud hilarious. One of my favorite commentaires from Jason Manzukas on the situation: "Does anyone else think this is absolutely ridiculous? I mean, we're seriously sitting here in 2008 unable to shoot and/or stab Osama Bin Laden on the face of the earth, but the first time out we can soot a missle and hit a heap of garbage moving through space at 17 thousand miles an hour. Bin Laden moves a lot slower, ok - he is hooked up to a dialysis machine somewhere...we can't even get a guy to put a pen knife through his throat but we can shoot...this boggles my mind..."

Also covered on the program this week was Wake Forest's own Eric Wilson, professor of English about his new book Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy. Go Deacs!

The show's co-creator and host is Faith Salie, a rhodes scholar with an interesting past life...so listen up and listen in M > F - you will enjoy it.

Kunda-what?

It's time for another yoga post...yesterday I experienced my first Kundalini yoga class ... it was super-groovy but surprisingly challenging. Basically, we worked in chairs and moved our upper bodies with breath in a supremely mindful manner. It was very tai-chi with the whole moving around energy idea....I have copied and pasted part of the Wikipedia entry on Kudalini yoga below - it's interesting to say the least.

I am also finishing up Eat, Pray, Love in the India portion and loving it. I have decided if I ever get the opportunity to go to India with Dave I must find an Ashram.

I know, I know - it's quite eastern!

Kundalini yoga is a physical and meditative discipline, comprising a set of techniques that use the mind, senses and body to create a communication between "mind" and "body". Kundalini yoga focuses on psycho-spiritual growth and the body's potential for maturation, giving special consideration to the role of the spine and the endocrine system in the understanding of yogic awakening (Sovatsky, 1998).
Kundalini Yoga concentrates on chakras in the body in order to generate a spiritual power, which is known as kundalini.
Kundalini is the potential form of prana or life force, lying dormant in our bodies. It is conceptualized as a coiled up serpent (literally, 'kundalini' in Sanskrit is 'That which is coiled.' (Sanskrit kund, "to burn"; kunda, "to coil or to spiral") but some claim that it should be translated 'lock of hair of the Beloved') lying at the base of our spine, which can spring awake when activated by spiritual disciplines.

There ya' go, Deacons!

Ok, I admit it. I never thought in a million years our young Deacon basketball squad would pull out the upset against the evil empire last night. I apologize for my lack of faith and trust. Check out this link for the complete recap of our solid victory:

So here are pics from David's first time...I have to say that he was way more impressed than he expected to be...there is even talk of building a nest box for hawks in our backyard...hehe...

Rockets, Raptors, and Romance

Today was a fabulous day in grade 5 at Trinity Episcopal School! We started our day with a rocket launch, held a bake sale to raise money for our service learning partner The Carolina Raptor Center, and, of course, distributed oh-so-coveted Valentines. One of the highlights of the day was that a raptor (a red-tailed hawk named Shoji) came to school for the sale! The kids were ecstatic and raised $471! I have included some pictures for your enjoyment...
